India Is Now ChatGPT’s Largest Market. Does ChatGPT Know Your Business Exists?

Updated: 4 November 2026

On 3 November 2026, OpenAI's India managing director Prabhjeet Singh confirmed something that would have sounded unlikely two years ago: India is now ChatGPT's largest market in the world by weekly active users. In February, OpenAI said India had crossed 100 million weekly users. Since January, that number has doubled.

Think about what that means for a business in Faridabad, Pune or Coimbatore. A very large share of your customers now open ChatGPT the way they used to open Google: to ask which CA to hire, which clinic is good nearby, how much a website should cost, which brand of water purifier to buy. And now ads are coming to ChatGPT in India, with brands like Tanishq, Tata Neu and Shaadi.com already on board.

This guide covers what OpenAI announced, what it changes for Indian businesses, a 2-minute test to see whether ChatGPT knows your business, and a 10-point plan to get recommended by AI assistants, not just found on Google.

Quick answer

India is now ChatGPT's largest market by weekly active users, with usage doubling since January 2026 from a base of over 100 million weekly users. For businesses, this means customers increasingly ask AI assistants for recommendations before they search Google. To be recommended, make sure your business has consistent, factual information across your website, Google Business Profile and directories; publish clear, specific pages that answer real customer questions with prices, locations and FAQs; earn mentions and reviews on sites AI models trust; and keep your site crawlable. Ads on ChatGPT are launching in India, but for most small businesses, being accurately described in AI answers matters more right now than paying to appear in them.

Why Indians are using ChatGPT like a search engine

  • It answers in your language and your context. Hindi, Hinglish, regional languages, Indian prices, Indian rules.
  • It gives one answer, not ten links. For a busy shop owner or a student on a phone, that is faster than Google.
  • It is cheap or free. The ₹399 Go plan and free tier make it accessible far beyond metros. See our guide to AI tool prices in India.
  • It is becoming the default on Android. OpenAI's Android-first push targets the device most Indians actually use.

The result: "ChatGPT, suggest a good interior designer in Gurgaon under ₹5 lakh" is now a normal sentence. The question is whether your business appears in the answer.

The 2-minute test: does ChatGPT know your business?

Open ChatGPT (or Gemini, or Perplexity) and ask these five questions, exactly the way a customer would:

  1. "Best [your service] in [your city]" and "near [your area]"
  2. "Tell me about [your business name]"
  3. "How much does [your service] cost in [your city]?"
  4. "[Your business name] reviews"
  5. "Compare [your business] and [your main competitor]"

Then score yourself:

What you seeWhat it means
Your business is named, described correctly, with the right location and servicesGood. Now focus on being recommended first and on reviews.
Named, but with wrong or outdated details (old address, old prices, closed services)Your information is inconsistent across the web. Fix your website, Google Business Profile and directories so they agree.
Not named at all; competitors areAI tools do not have enough clear, trusted information about you. Follow the 10 steps below.
"I don't have information about that business"Your website may not be crawlable or indexed. Start with our guide on why a website is not showing on Google.

10 steps to get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants

  1. Make your facts consistent everywhere. Same business name, address, phone, services and hours on your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, LinkedIn and social pages. AI models cross-check sources; disagreement makes them cautious.
  2. Write an "About" page that reads like an answer. Who you are, what you do, for whom, where, since when, and what makes you different, in plain sentences. AI assistants quote this kind of text.
  3. Publish prices or price ranges. "How much does X cost" is one of the most common AI questions. Pages with real numbers get cited; pages that say "contact us for pricing" do not.
  4. One page per service and location. "Website development in Faridabad" should have its own page with specifics, not a line in a list.
  5. Add FAQs with direct answers. Each question your customers ask on calls deserves a two-to-four-sentence answer on your site.
  6. Earn mentions on sites AI trusts. Directory listings, industry associations, local news, guest articles, partner pages and genuine reviews. AI models learn what the web says about you, not just what you say.
  7. Keep your site crawlable by AI. Check your robots.txt. Blocking AI crawlers that power live answers removes you from them. Our guide to the new robots.txt AI training rule explains what to allow and what to block.
  8. Use structured data. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ and Review schema help machines read your pages correctly.
  9. Publish genuinely useful content regularly. Comparisons, checklists, cost guides and local guides are what AI assistants pull from. Our blog on SEO in the age of AI search goes deeper.
  10. Re-test monthly. Ask the five questions again. AI answers change as models and sources update; track whether you are moving up.

Ads on ChatGPT: should you care yet?

OpenAI is rolling out ads in India with large consumer brands first, through platforms such as Razorpay Engage. For most small and mid-sized businesses, three things are true today:

  • You probably cannot buy them yet, and when you can, the first formats will favour brands with catalogues and budgets.
  • Organic presence comes first. An ad next to an answer that does not mention you, or describes you wrongly, is wasted money. Fix the facts first.
  • Watch the format. OpenAI says ads will not change ChatGPT's answers. If that holds, being in the answer remains more valuable than being next to it.

Our advice: spend the next three months on the 10 steps above, and revisit paid placements once they are open to smaller advertisers and the measurement is clear.

Building on ChatGPT: what local infrastructure means for Indian companies

Two announcements matter if you are building AI into your own products or operations:

  • Data stays in India. With OpenAI models available on AWS Bedrock for local inference and a TCS data-centre partnership starting at 100 MW, Indian companies can use frontier models while keeping processing in the country. For regulated sectors and for DPDP compliance (core obligations from 13 May 2027), this removes a major objection. See our DPDP checklist.
  • Lower latency, better Indian-language performance. Local capacity and language investment mean WhatsApp bots, voice agents and document tools built for Indian customers work better. Costs and options are in our guide to AI agent development cost in India.

India being Codex's fastest-growing market, with developers in tier-II cities leading, also confirms what we see daily: small, AI-assisted teams in Faridabad or Indore can now deliver what used to need a large metro agency.

5 mistakes to avoid

  • Stuffing "best" and "No.1" into your pages. AI models discount superlatives without evidence (and for doctors, NMC rules now prohibit them).
  • Blocking all bots in robots.txt. You disappear from AI answers and sometimes from Google.
  • Letting old information live on. Closed branches, old phone numbers and outdated prices on directories confuse AI tools for years.
  • Buying fake reviews. Platforms detect them, and AI models learn from the sources that remove them.
  • Treating AI visibility as a one-time project. It is a monthly habit, like checking your Google Business Profile.
